Ever since MediaCityUK opened in Salford back in 2007, property values in the city have kept on rising. There is no doubt that MediaCity is one of the greatest assets Salford now has and, more widely, benefits the entire North West region, so perhaps the increase in the property values should not come as much of a surprise.
Originally a a 200-acre mixed-use property development site, the scale of the project considerably expanded with the decision of the BBC to relocate a sizeable part of its London channels to their new purpose built facility at MediaCity, a move which was quickly followed by other broadcasters. From then on, Salford has started to slowly put the capital in the shade for many things media and TV related, counting no less than 40 companies located there today. In 2010, Greater Manchester’s Metrolink light-rail system was extended to MediaCity, which generated additional impetus to the relocation of large numbers of professionals to Salford and in particular to the developing dock area.
Most recently the growth rate in property values in the city has outpaced any other cities in Britain from the start of 2014, according to a recent article from The Guardian in which values are reported to have gone up by 12% against 8.2% for London, turning Salford into the United Kingdom’s hotspot when it comes to property investment. It is believed that these results rely in part to MediaCity’s success and continued growth but not entirely. Salford has been experiencing a development of its own outside the borders of MediaCity, especially with the increasing popularity of the University, which has an excellent reputation.
