The city of Salford is currently undergoing a number of exciting major developments. The city has been steadily increasing in popularity with students, investors and large corporations for several years, starting with the birth of MediaCityUK back in 2006 – one of the largest urban regeneration projects in the UK.
When, back in 2003, the BBC announced that many of its channels would be moving up north, the MediaCity site at Salford Docks was chosen, and since then some of the UK’s largest media corporations have taken their place at the development. The BBC, ITV, Satellite Information Services and The University of Salford all have bases at MediaCity, and Channel 4 has also recently expressed an interest in the development. Since MediaCity opened, Salford has emerged as a tourist attraction, as well as popular city for both residential and commercial developments.
However the rest of Salford is soon to follow the lead. The city is already popular with students due to the excellent university and night life, and the number of professionals choosing to rent in Salford is growing due to its transport links with Manchester City Centre and MediaCityUK. But there are yet more changes in the works for this booming city – plans to develop a large area of land on the Salford/Manchester border are already under way. The scheme aims to build 500 apartments and 7,000sq ft of commercial property, ranged around Wilburn Basin, just across the water from the Granada site. This follows the 2012 announcement that thousands of new homes, restaurants, a park, shops, gyms and a hotel would be built at Middlelock Woods, which is only a stones throw away from the Wilburn Basin development.
These developments on the border of Salford and Manchester all demonstrate a desire to bring the two cities together. Building on the success of Salford developments such as MediaCity and popular Manchester sites such as Spinningfields and Castlefield, Greater Manchester is set to continue as the commercial capital of the north. With so many large brands and organisations already setting up shop in the North West, developments such as Wilburn Basin and Middlelock Woods can only increase the number of professionals and investors who want to benefit from its success.
